Not just a day off.

Updated: Oct 24, 2019

Memorial Day.

Let me start by saying that I’ve been fortunate enough to have not lost anyone in the armed forces. My heart breaks for those that have. I do not write this post lightly. Please know if you have lost someone, you’re being prayed for.

I think when we haven’t lost anyone close to us, it’s easy to just think of this holiday as a day-off from work, and a day to relax and enjoy family and eat lots of food.

But to the wives who said goodbye to their husbands for the last time, this day is the hardest.

To the moms who raise their babes alone, this day is the hardest.

To the babies who never get to meet their daddy, this day is the hardest.

To the kids who wait eagerly for their dads to come home, but never will, this day is the hardest.

To the parents who will never hug their child again, this day is the hardest.

To the friends who remember their buddy and all he meant to them, this day is the hardest.

I will never understand the pain of this day, but I will pray endlessly for those that do.

As a mom of two little ones, I can’t imagine saying “goodbye” instead of “see you later”. I just can’t imagine it…and I’m so so sorry for those that are living it.

The men and women who sacrifice their lives each and every day for our country aren’t just our heroes, they’re someone’s spouse, parent, child, and friend. We must remember that, and use this day to remember and honor them.

This day honors those here today and those gone from this earth. Those that gave their lives for our freedom. And those that fight for it every day.

This day also reminds me of the One who paid the price for our eternal freedom–Jesus.

He was a Son, a friend, a Savior. He fights all of our battles for us. He saves us from Hell and even ourselves. He continues to save us, daily.

I write all of this to say, thank you.

Thank you to the service men and women, for your strength and bravery, dedication and sacrifice…thank you to the strong loved ones they leave behind, and thank you to Jesus, for fighting our battles, for saving our lives, and for making this life worth living.

The land of the free, because of the brave.
